what happened to this channel? did the guy making the videos gave up on it?
Nope, still here. Taking a break. Got bored of chasing the algorithm!
@@OrganicActing got it! Thanks for replying and doing what you do with your channel!
Conhecer e perceber e entender melhor as minhas emoções
0:35 These are very good movies for in own genre. You just repeat your conversation with memorized, taught herd psychology about these movies.
This isn't a movie review channel. Also, this video is a commentary on De Niro's acting technique.
@@OrganicActing Relax loser. :)
Some folks recommend starting with the scene and slating at the end. Would that change your recommendation to add a taste of the character's essence to the slate? Thanks!
Interesting. You're right, performing the scene and then slating would achieve that. I just go from my experience: slate first, then scene. To be honest, some CDs skip through, looking at faces before they even watch!
Thank you for this video. It's very helpful!
In a pinch, you can use breathing techniques to instantly change your emotions. Want to get angry, breathe in heavy and exhale heavy quickly. You will see how fast you can become angry
For sure. For me though - as a student of Staniskavski, naturalism and theatrical truth - this is akin to 'pretending' rather than 'experiencing'.
The Meisner technique is far superior to the Adler technique. It's more of a "what's my problem with you" than bringing up personal experiences to bring up emotions. You don't need to recall the day your dog died to make you cry in a scene where your wife is dying. Just connect with the other person and allow yourself to have a thin skin.
Yes, that's right. Although, I always wondered how essential it was to learn Meisner: watching, listening and responding, in the moment, are foundation techniques in acting and a 'given' (in my humble opinion).
@@OrganicActing my acting coach was trained by Sandy, and I find it easier to get "the ball to drop" using his technique. We want to be truthful and not "real." You can be real in therapy. It's much easier to get down to the basic of "what's my problem with the other person, and not getting it." Say that you want someone to leave, and they are not doing it. How are you going to react in this situation to get this person out, and how are you going to respond when he or she doesn't do it. Also, you have to have a sense of urgency as well. When do you want this person out? Now, tomorrow, next week? Hopefully, it's now, because you are going to let it hit you harder and your emotional response will will be better more immediate. I hate "method" acting, because it wants you to accept a false situation that you know is false. When you are on stage "waving goodbye to your friend who is going to die" and you are looking at the wings, you are not seeing a friend going to die, you see two stage hands playing cards. It's how you feel about your friend that gives you your emotions.
I still put it down to how strong an actor's imagination is and whether they give up too easily. A slice of life is not for the squeamish. You either can manage it or you can't. Other techniques are available.
Hey Chris, great Video! Just a quick question but it's to do with units. For every new unit, do you have to follow a new objective or can you still follow the same objective from the last beat? I only ask because from what I've read, people seem to say that a character has one main objective (want) in a scene. Any explanation would be really appreciated. Cheers
Thank you! So: a new unit is when there's a change in the drama. An character can arrive or exit the scene, there could be a big reveal, something major takes place. Your character, absolutely, could have the same objective. It's not essential your objective changes, just that it makes sense in the 'new' unit.
Many thanks for breaking this down so nicely. Super useful. (And can I assume the chicken is organic ;-)
Of course!
Bro be posting the lamest shit
Even though this was posted a while ago it's still such a helpful video! Thanks Chris
I'm glad it still helps and has a place!
awesome
Great Video. Every thing explained in detail and in simple terms. Read An Actor Prepares few years back and your videos are a great refresher. Thank you for your efforts.

Very useful good intro to Stan

I clicked on the video as a joke cuz of Red Flood but now I am actually interested. I plan on doing this before my next theater play
Excellent!
He's a very talented actor with many hidden gems

The shade on Brooklyn Beckham 😭🤣
Hi, thanks for the video, this is very useful. I have a question though. I am studying in a drama school and we often talk about objectives. You give an exemple of an objective "I want to convince that I am right", but I remember that one of my teacher said that an objective has to be a verb, an action and get upset when one student said he want to "convince" someone else, because he is afraid that people will only talk on stage and not act. What do you think ?
I admit, 'convince' isn't the strongest of verbs, but it is still a 'doing' word. I always try to whittle it down to something more concrete. Rather than 'convince you I'm right' it could be 'win your support'.
You have replied very quickly ! Thank you so much 😊 I think I get it now. I am certainly going to ask others questions on your channel, I am a desperate student trying to find a solution to play properly my character in a play 😂 I am leaving this video to watch the one about units...
Happy to help!
Cheers 😊 which video is about units ? I can't find it anymore
⭐⭐
I always found accessing emotional memory from the past very stressful, I was at a juncture where I thought I should stop learning acting.. but then I came across your channel.. thank you so very much for affirming my belief that it indeed can be stressful and also not true to the given situation... I am trying now to play a character by building a backstory and trying to put myself in that situation.. and yes I can confirm that it wouldn't work on day one (at least for me).. but as you go through the character few days, you feel for him/her.. I latch on to that.
Excellent! Good luck.
@@OrganicActing thank you 🙏🏼

Was including the morbius dance in the video really necessery????😅😂
... Yes. Yes it was. 🤣
loved this ..U focused on DeNero .. but Chris .. U overlooked Method actor/teacher Bobby Lewis when U named teachers ..Bobby was in Group Theater .. founded The Actors Studio w EliaKazan.. both working directors they gave it over to unemployed Lee Strasberg.. Bobby Lewis wrote book “Method or Madness” created/launched Yale’s Drama Department where he taught Meryl Streep.. she recommended him to study with bcause of his excellence in conveying the core of method acting🎭♥️
So many practitioners, so little time...
Great video... Very useful resume of stanislavski
Thank you 🙏🏻
You are welcome, sir.
Excellent . I told Declan, after he’d talked about some actors going down a meisner tunnel , that I tell my students his book is the best book ever written about the Meisner technique. He found it hysterically funny which I guess it is . He was preparing a new book just before Covid . Wonder where it is …
Ha ha! That's great!
what is ment by inner and outer temple Also inner and outer rhythem
Tempo and rhythm. Every character has an internal speed (thought) and outer speed (physicality).
@@OrganicActing Is it possible to show internal speed Outer speed is easy to show and it's heavily covered but i cannot find examples on internal speed
Imagine a character that moves slowly but thinks fast. Can outwit others. For example, Vito Corleone, the Godfather...
@@OrganicActing Thankyou for that info I will to rewatch the Movie to see Vito Corleone in action
I have a question for u thought, I always tried to figure out the secret that makes al such a good actor and how he seems different from each character he plays.do you happen to know why
I would say that he realises that every character has a different background and outlook on life which he then feeds into each role!
hi i really would like how al came with how he will say a particular dialogue, his movement when he says it , his eyes , his hands, fir example in the scene of kiss me man in dog day afternoon how he moves his hand and blow a kiss, also in the scne of im in the dark here, how he emphasise the A in the dark . i wanna know how he come up with these things and as an actor how can i come up with suh things. thanks
So what’s the point, the perfect rhetoric? , the ultimate bald statement, it’s a bit of a one trick pony, how many times do you need to be told? would you sit through a play that’s telling you this over and over? I know it’s the truth but I think I like a bit of diversion with my quest for the sublime. Morse Peckham says “art is the exposure to the tensions and problems of a false world in order that man may endure the tensions and problems of the real world.” Fair nuff. Stuart Lee does a routine where for 50 minutes , I know I counted them , he repeats the same details about a skate boarder in Milton Keynes , very funny as a concept but like the London Stock Exchange a one off building with all its guts on the outside , it’s not something that evokes emulation or repetition, and in Stuart Lees case it’s was the thirty second time he repeated himself that really made me laugh The ultimate statement isn’t worth saying, surely that the point of post modernism Kylie is every bit as valid as Michael Angelo, art is invalid , it’s an art form to invalidate art, the revolution will be televised it’s all Sisyphean but how many times, how many times , how many times, how many times , how many times, how many times , how many times, how many times , how many times, how many times , how many times, how many times , how many times, how many times , how many times, how many times , how many times, how many times , how many times, how many times …..
To be honest, I respond to this theatrical movement the same as any other piece of art: if it creates catharsis in you, fantastic; if not, move on and find something else.
@@OrganicActing i like a bit of analysis though Organic, Im of the opinion that the discussion enhances the comprehension and the overall effect, the artist is a catalyst for the rest of us wankers to wah on about what they've done. Although the artist may role their eyes or nash the teeth really, really they are after recognition , art is a proffered hypothesis that plays to the gallery, its obligatory to discuss, after all "in the room women come and go talking of Michael Angelo." I fully appreciate the ability to move on but we must be careful not to fall into the philistine bog of not knowing much about art but knowing what we like, like maths homework you have to show the working out. I too have enjoyed and been stimulated by the theatre of the absurd since i was 16 , i just loved that Eugene Ionesco, its just now seems to be a good juncture to 'discuss '
Great lesson....thanx! 😊
Very interesting. Thank you :)
Thank you for watching. 🙂
Did you do one on meisner yet ? Chubbuck is pretty interesting too . Or Keith Johnstone . Your videos are really well done . Wish more my students could speak English :-) it would save me time in class :-D »
Meister is an odd one for me. Reacting truthfully in the moment is something all actors should do anyway....
@@OrganicActing yeah they should . I think it's just another way of getting there . he strutted with different exercises but good acting is good acting is good acting. People get cultish about it sometimes but when I studied in the U.S. it was just one more thing that people had done . Our school in France is based on Meisner and Lecoq but then with Method Adler and Stanislavsky as well . I liked it when I studied it .🙂
OMG OMG Sense memory is NOT limited to that which you personally have experienced!!!! Full freaking stop. That is a misunderstanding from the US tour Stanislavsky took in the 30's. He was never able to convince his American proteges that they were laboring under enormous misconceptions, partly because they had already significantpy monetarily capitalized on the ideas they had seized on, called THAT "method" and so they all flatly refused to listen to a word he said. It freaking broke his heart and his spirit. It was plain greedy and shitty. Here's how the whole thing went down. This is just one of the reasons I won't teach American Method. Stanislavsky was always experimenting and for a brief - very brief - second, he put forth the idea (just a notion, as he had not yet worked with it and once he did, he quickly discarded it as not useful and potentially even dangerous) namely, that you can work with what you personally have experienced only. And that you can draw from it like drawing water from a well, again and again. Sadly, THIS NOTION IS FALSE. It leads to desensitization, which then leads to forced acting, which then leads the actor to shut down. As in flat, boring performances that are not "nuanced", or truthful, just dull and repetitive. The emperor, in effect, has no clothes. No one wants to admit they are bored and frustrated. If you're feeling frustrated, "stuck" and not enjoying acting, this is the BIGGEST reason why. Because that shit is also massively triggering and can even inflict harm. People like River Phoenix, who were abused and used these memories in their work, have been driven to suicide. It IS a wonderful way to control people, though. And control they did. Just read up on what Marilyn Monroe's teacher DID to her. Monsters. Sense memory is the exact opposite of recalling personal emotional traumas. It most closely resembles what very small children do when they are playing "pretend", which is an engrossing, all immersive experience during which the constricting sense of self IS COMPLETELY LOST, subsumed by completely other individuals, with unique habits of locomotion, facial expression, gesture, memory and objectives.
I don't remember prescribing an absolute.
Thanks for responding. In the absence of teaching foundational approaches to the actor's instrument, and relegating these approaches to brief "warm ups" not associated with the core training, students are set adrift.
😂I just listened to your video and discovered you agreed with much of what I said. 😮
@@leslielandberg5620 It's all so interesting. I love how Stan was experimenting his whole life and evolving his Method!
What’s the alternative to the pointless labours of sisyphus , it’s kinda how we survive , it’s an elaborate market of exchange that ultimately has the basic function of feeding us to continue our pointless existence
Hear, hear!
Free education of life ❤ thank u
Thank you! My A Level exam on Godot is next week, this video was very helpful in summarising the Theatre of the Absurd! Wish me luck haha.
You are very welcome. I wish you the best of luck for your exam!
Hi. I bet you get this question a lot, but what videos or books should I watch/read as someone who wants to get into acting (and as a total beginner with no professional experience)? For some reason, I've always been aware of Stanislavsky's theories but unconsciously. I've read a lot of self help books such as psychocybernetics, and they all taught me to imagine how my ideal self would act or react in certain circumstances, so you'd transition into your ideal self without any real forcing. I know acting isn't about actually becoming, but we can say it's still quite similar. I'm also Italian. Do you think I should start in Italy and build a portfolio and only then consider trying abroad? Thanks a lot in advance.
I would try to build some experience where you are right now, absolutely. Then branch out. In terms of books that have helped me, I recommend: 'An Actor Prepares' (Stanislavski); 'Stanislavski in Practice' (Nick O'Brien); 'Secrets of Screen Acting' (Patrick Tucker). Hope these help you. Good luck!
@@OrganicActing thanks a lot!
great!!🎉
Here’s another very good short episode on this acting class/lecture. I highly recommend it and it’s 5W’s questions. If you are a serious Actor or enthusiast, check this out.
I found this short lecture/class on acting very helpful. And don’t worry it’s not about effective memory for playing a part which Stanislavski first introduced, it’s something more important and better for actors, wishing to grasp onto a character.
thanks man! I have a group assignment about artaud and this will really help!!
